Mechanical keyboards
The mechanical keyboard relies on a physical switch under each key. A metal contact registers the keystroke, then a spring returns the key to its original position. It is a mature, reliable and very durable technology, with a typing feel many players find more satisfying. It remains an excellent base for versatile use, gaming and typing alike.
Magnetic keyboards
The magnetic keyboard, also called Hall Effect or HE, uses a magnetic sensor that continuously measures how far the key has travelled. No physical contact is needed to validate the keystroke. This approach unlocks features impossible elsewhere, such as Rapid Trigger and adjustable actuation, and removes mechanical wear entirely. It is today's benchmark in esports.
Optical keyboards
The optical keyboard registers a keystroke through a light beam interrupted by the key stem. With no metal contact, detection latency is very low and lifespan is high. The technology remains less widespread than magnetic, and does not match its depth of adjustment.
Membrane keyboards
The membrane keyboard works with rubber domes. Less precise, less responsive, with a mushy feel and a limited lifespan, it is now outdated for gaming. That is exactly why we no longer stock them at Maxesport.

The switch is the mechanism sitting under each key. It determines the actuation force, the travel, the sound profile and the overall feel of your keyboard. Two identical keyboards fitted with different switches deliver completely different experiences.
There are three main families: linear switches with a smooth, consistent travel, tactile switches that provide a bump at the actuation point, and clicky switches that add a pronounced sound. Each family then contains dozens of references with their own characteristics.
One important thing to check is hot swap compatibility. A hot swap keyboard lets you replace switches without soldering, simply by pulling them out by hand. You can test several typing feels or replace a faulty switch without buying a new keyboard.

These two features alone justify moving to a magnetic keyboard.
Adjustable actuation lets you set how deep a key must travel before registering, usually between 0.1 and 4 millimetres. A very short actuation point makes the keyboard extremely responsive in game. A deeper one prevents accidental presses while typing. Some keyboards allow a per key setting.
Rapid Trigger goes further. Instead of waiting for the key to rise back past a fixed threshold before deactivating, it tracks every change of direction in real time. As soon as you release by a few tenths of a millimetre, the key deactivates, and it reactivates on the slightest press. The gain is significant on strafes and counter strafes in games such as Valorant, CS2 or Apex Legends.

Beyond Rapid Trigger, several technical options directly influence your in game performance.
- SOCD: short for Simultaneous Opposite Cardinal Directions, also known as Snap Tap or Rappy Snappy. It handles conflicting inputs by prioritising the last key pressed when two opposite directions are held.
- DKS: Dynamic Keystroke assigns up to four different actions to a single key depending on press depth.
- Mod Tap: one key triggers one action on a short press and another on a long press.
- NKRO: N Key Rollover guarantees that every simultaneously pressed key is properly registered.
- Anti ghosting: makes keys independent from one another to avoid input errors on combinations.
- Macros: record a sequence of actions triggered by a single key, essential in MOBA and MMO.
- Windows key disabling: keeps you from dropping to the desktop mid fight.

A keyboard's latency is the delay between the physical press and the game registering the action. It depends on two factors: polling rate and connection type.
Polling rate is how often the keyboard reports to the computer. At 1000 Hz, the standard, it sends a thousand reports per second, which means one millisecond between each. Recent models reach 4000 Hz or even 8000 Hz, bringing that interval down to 0.125 milliseconds.
On the connection side, three options exist:
- Wired: the lowest and most stable latency, with no battery to manage.
- 2.4 GHz wireless: through a dongle, it now matches wired performance and has become the esports standard.
- Bluetooth: convenient for portability and multi device use, but its latency makes it unsuitable for competitive play.

The format determines the number of keys and the footprint on your desk. It is a structural choice, because it dictates how much room your mouse has and therefore your range of movement.
- 100%: the full layout with a numpad, ideal for mixed gaming and office use.
- TKL: short for TenKeyLess, it drops the numpad and frees up valuable space. It is the most popular compromise.
- 75%: compact while keeping the function row and arrow keys.
- 65%: drops the function row but keeps the arrow keys.
- 60%: the minimalist format favoured by many professional FPS players, relying on key combinations for the missing functions.
Sitting apart is the low profile design, whose flat structure and flat keys reduce the keyboard's height and keep the wrist aligned. Comfort is real, typing precision slightly lower.

The layout refers to the physical arrangement of the keys, which should not be confused with the format.
ISO FR corresponds to the French AZERTY arrangement, with a vertical Enter key and an extra key to the left of W. It is the natural choice if you regularly type in French.
ANSI US offers a QWERTY arrangement with a horizontal Enter key. It largely dominates the gaming and custom keyboard market, which brings two concrete advantages: far better availability on high end models, and an incomparable choice of replacement keycaps. Many French players switch to ANSI for this reason, while keeping the AZERTY software layout.
๐ Build quality and sound
Build quality shapes typing comfort and the keyboard's sound, two elements often underestimated at purchase.
The mounting style defines how the plate attaches to the case. A gasket mount, where the plate rests on soft gaskets, gives a softer typing feel and a deeper sound. A top mount gives a firmer feel and more direct feedback.
Internal foams, placed under the plate and under the PCB, absorb resonance and remove the hollow effect. The case, in plastic or aluminium, also affects weight, rigidity and sound.
Finally, keycaps have a direct impact. PBT resists wear and shine better than ABS, and their thickness noticeably changes the sound profile.

RGB backlighting has become a standard on gaming keyboards. Beyond aesthetics, it helps you find your keys during late night sessions, highlight specific keys per game, and synchronise all your compatible peripherals. It can also be switched off entirely for a understated look.
The bundled software is a technical criterion in its own right, since every advanced setting goes through it: actuation point, Rapid Trigger, macros, profiles, remapping. Some manufacturers require an application install, others offer configuration directly in the browser.
Keyboards compatible with QMK and VIA go further, offering full firmware customisation without depending on proprietary software.
Some high end models add a multimedia panel with a volume wheel, playback keys and sometimes a screen, giving quick access to settings without leaving the game.
